How to Cook a Striploin Steak

There are a range of steaks you can cook to produce a delicious and impressive meal for yourself, family and friends. Steak can be grilled or fried; either way delivers a tender and flavoursome piece of meat that is perfect as a dish for any day of the week.

The most popular steaks that are served by top chefs in restaurants around the world include tenderloin, ribeye, top sirloin, T-bone and strip steaks. These steaks are the tastiest cuts of beef with a good amount of marbling and a great texture. Today we are bringing you a guide on how to cook striploin steak (also known as a New York steak).

Why is Striploin Steak so Popular?

Striploin steak is incredibly popular in both homes and restaurants as it not only tastes great but is also one of the best sources of protein to consume. Striploin is cut from the short loin of a cow; this is at the back of the animal behind the ribcage. Because the muscles in the back of the cow are not worked much, the meat is extremely tender and enjoyable. Striploin is known for its beefy flavour and marbling which is loved by many different people. Although striploin steak is a premium cut of beef, it is more affordable than other cuts such as filet mignon.

How Long Does it Take to Cook Striploin Steak?

A striploin does not take long to cook, but it is important that it sits at room temperature for about 30 minutes before being grilled or fried so that muscle fibres are relaxed and the steak cooks evenly throughout. You should also let your steak rest for 5 to 10 minutes after it has cooked to again allow muscles to relax, and for the juice and flavour to distribute evenly through the steak.

If you would like your striploin steak cooked rare, then grill or fry it for about 3 to 4 minutes on each side. Cook your steak for 4 to 5 minutes on each side for medium and 5 to 6 minutes on each side for a well-done striploin steak.

Overall, from the start of preparation to the end of cooking, it will take around 45 to 50 minutes to prepare and cook your steak.

Although this may seem like a long time, striploin steak is a very easy meal to prepare, as once your steak has been seasoned and left to rest for 30 minutes, it will only take around 10 minutes to cook.

How Do You Cook the Perfect Medium Steak?

A striploin steak can be fried or grilled. If you are frying your steak then it is best to use a cast-iron skillet or griddle pan as this equipment will help to keep the required heat you need for cooking an evenly flavoured steak. Brush your steak with olive oil, salt and pepper to season before cooking.

For a delicious medium steak, heat your pan or grill to very high heat for a few minutes before adding your striploin. Once your steak is in the pan or on the grill, leave it in place so that it browns and caramelizes, before cooking it for 4 to 5 minutes on each side. Turn the steak once only so that it doesn't become dry and use tongs so that the steak is not pierced. If the steak is pierced while cooking then all the wonderful juices that flavour the meat will escape.

After 4 to 5 minutes on each side, check the firmness of the steak with your tongs; it should feel slightly firm in the centre but not too soft or too firm. Remove your steak from the pan carefully and leave it to rest for 5 to 10 minutes. You can serve your steak with a range of ingredients; asparagus, peas, garlic and mushrooms are popular choices.

How Do You Make a Striploin Tender?

A striploin steak is already incredibly tender and flavoursome because it comes from a part of the animal where muscles have had little use. To create the perfect steak, there are a few ways you can ensure that the meat is cooked so that it is tender and succulent.

The best way to ensure a striploin steak is tender is to leave it to rest once you have grilled or fried it. Leaving your steak to rest allows the muscles to relax which allows the flavour and juice to spread through the meat. If you are cutting your striploin yourself, you should cut against the grain to make sure the meat is as tender as possible.

Cutting meat against the grain decreases the muscle fibre in the slice of beef which makes it more tender and much less chewy.
